Program Overview

Diabetes educators are responsible for providing diabetes self-management education and support to women with Gestational Diabetes (GDM). In this 90-minute webinar, diabetes educators will learn all the latest regarding GDM including diagnosis, management, and postpartum follow-up.

Learning Outcome

The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to provide education and care to women diagnosed with GDM.

Activity Type:

This is an application-based learning activity. This 90-minute online session includes a presentation followed by a question and answer period.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

-- Discuss new recommendations for the diagnosis of hyperglycemia during pregnancy
-- Identify implications of poor maternal glucose control on mothers and offspring of mothers with GDM
-- Discuss recent advances in the treatment and management of GDM
-- Describe recommendations for postpartum follow-up for women with GDM

Intended Audience

The AADE Webinars are knowledge-based activities designed for individual or groups of diabetes educators, including RNs, RDs, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, MDs, and other health care providers interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for their patients with diabetes and other related conditions.


Carol J. Homko, PhD, RN, CDE
Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator
Seattle, Washington

Dr. Carol Homko is a nurse and certified diabetes educator, with more than 40 years of experience in diabetes education and management. She established the Diabetes and Pregnancy Program at Temple University Hospital in 1991. Prior to her retirement in 2016, Dr. Homko held a dual appointment as Associate Research Professor in the Department of Medicine, Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and in the College of Public Health, Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University.

Dr. Homko’s research interests include diabetes and obesity, CVD risk reduction, telemedicine and pregnancies complicated by diabetes. She has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and has authored multiple chapters on the management of pregnancies complicated by diabetes. Dr. Homko remains actively involved with the American Association of Diabetes Educators at both the local and national levels.

Accreditation Statement

Registered Nurses

The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This program provides 1.5 contact hours of continuing education credit.

The AADE is also accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP # 10977).

Registered Dietitians

The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AM001) is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). CDR Credentialed Practitioners will receive 1.5 Continuing Professional Education units (CPEUs) for completion of this activity/material. Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation does not constitute endorsement by CDR of a provider, program, or materials.

Registered Pharmacists

The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program provides 1.5 contact hours (0.15 CEUs) of continuing education credit.

Certified Diabetes Educators

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (NCBDE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the NCBDE list of Approved Providers ( NCBDE does not approve continuing education. The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) is on the NCBDE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

AADE is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by AADE can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.
