Eligibility Requirements: 
  • At this time, the CDC does not list specific educational or credential requirements, in order to participate in a Lifestyle Coach training.
  • AADE does require that participants are familiar with the CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program
  •  The AADE DPP Lifestyle Coach Training program prepares individuals to use the CDC's Prevent T2 curriculum within a CDC-recognized Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP).  The course is not intended for individuals interested in becoming a general health coach.
Course Structure: The course is a 6-week online course that includes online self-study modules and 5 conference calls.  The program is facilitated by an AADE Master Lifestyle Coach trainer. Coursework includes:
  • Prevention 101: The Basics of Diabetes and Prediabetes course: 5 modules & post-test
  • AADE Online Lifestyle Coach Training course: 8 modules & post test
  • Participation in mandatory 5 conference call discussions and activities
 
Conference Call Schedule: Wednesdays, 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM Central Time (90 minutes).  Participation in conference calls is mandatory.

Continuing Education Credit: 12 CEs for nurses, dietitians, and pharmacists
 
Learning Objectives: At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
 
1.   Describe the evidence base of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)-
      sponsored Diabetes Prevention Program Study.
2.   Identify key strategies used to translate the DPP Study into the National DPP and PreventT2, a CDC-recognized
      lifestyle change curriculum.
3.   Define the role of a lifestyle coach for CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs, comparing the lifestyle
      coach with other diabetes education professionals.
4.   Utilizing case studies of eligible and ineligible participants, describe participant eligibility criteria for the
      National DPP.
5.   Describe participant outcomes for the National DPP, identifying how program structure, content, and
      activities, such as tracking and action planning, support the achievement of those outcomes.
6.   Review PreventT2 materials, including the participant’s guide and the lifestyle coach training guide, to
      understand how program content supports skill building, self-monitoring, and psychosocial development.
7.   Diagram the core sessions (1-16) of PreventT2 to determine learning objectives, major concepts, major
      activities, and action planning guidance.
8.   Illustrate lifestyle coaching strategies to activate program content within group sessions.
9.   Review and practice group facilitation techniques that build trust, increase participation, and encourage
      positive health behavior change.
10. Practice group facilitation techniques, lifestyle coaching strategies, and understanding of program content
      through role-playing activities, i.e., teach-backs.
11. Describe the core maintenance sessions (17-26) of PreventT2 to determine learning objectives, major
      concepts, and key materials.
12. Discuss key strategies to increase participant readiness, engagement, and retention across the 12-month
      CDC-recognized lifestyle change program.
13. Identify best practices in reviewing food and physical activity tracking logs, action plans, and other
      participant materials.
14. Explain how programs can meet the National Diabetes Prevention Program Recognition Standards to
      achieve full recognition.
15. Describe the national landscape of the diabetes prevention program, especially as it relates to coverage by
      Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers. 
 
Faculty: Ronda Merryman-Valiyi MSN, RN, CDE,  Manager of Education and Nursing Support Services
 
Ronda Merryman-Valiyi has been a certified diabetes educator for over 10 years, serving as Manager of the Diabetes Management Program at Baptist Health in Louisville, KY since 2010. She oversees the Diabetes Self-Management Program and Diabetes Prevention Program for Baptist Health locations in Louisville and LaGrange. She has been a National Diabetes Prevention Program facilitator since 2013 and also serves a Master Trainer for the program, assisting others to become Lifestyle Coaches.
 
She served as the volunteer Local Networking Group Leader for the Greater Louisville Association of Diabetes Educator (GLADE) for 3 years and continues to be an active member of that group. She participates in various groups throughout the State of Kentucky that promote advocacy for people with diabetes and pre-diabetes. Ronda loves working with participants in DPP cohorts to help them learn about making positive lifestyle changes to prevent or delay Type 2 Diabetes. Since facilitating the program, she has become an avid fitness promoter in her own life, committing to the minimum 150 minutes of physical activity with High Intensity Interval Training classes.

Cancellation Policy: The American Association of Diabetes Educators reserves the right to cancel the program. Registrants will be notified if the program is canceled and will receive a full refund of their registration fee. registrants will be  and assumes no responsibility for personal expenses.
 
Refund: AADE provides full refunds (less $200 administrative fee) for registrations canceled no later than 10 business days prior to the first day of the course. If a cancellation is made within 0-10 days prior to the first day of the course, a refund will not be provided.  All refunds are processed within 30 days of receipt.
