Program Overview

Low-calorie sugars are naturally occurring, and soon you can expect to see more sweeteners like this appearing in prepared foods. Their lower calorie count and lower blood glucose impact can make it a challenge to calculate how they affect choices for people with diabetes. Learn how new low-calorie sugars like allulose impact blood glucose, and get tools to help your patients manage their numbers.

Program Purpose

This activity gives diabetes educators relevant knowledge about the new sweetener category, low-calorie sugars, such as allulose, and get useful educational information/tools to assist people with diabetes to integrate them into their daily diabetes self-management plan..

Activity Type

This is a knowledge-based learning activity. This 90-minute online session includes a presentation followed by a question and answer period.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
  • Identify research and data about the new category of low-calorie sugars and their usage as an option for individuals with diabetes.
  • Explain the sugar-like taste/texture, nutrition and blood glucose impact of low-calorie sugars in prepared products for people with diabetes.
  • Describe possible benefits of taste acceptance, negligible calories and no blood glucose rise of low-calorie sugars if included in a healthy diabetes meal plan.
