Program Overview
The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to provide diabetes education for people who have visual impairment and are otherwise capable of self-management to achieve equivalent outcomes as fully sighted people.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- State 2 definitions each of blindness and low vision, one in terms of visual fields & acuity and one in functional terms
- List at least 3 common courtesies to use when encountering a person who is blind.
- List 3 useful assessment questions for people with functional low vision to help plan services for people with visual impairment and describe what the answers mean for your educational plan.
- Describe tools or techniques for low vision or nonvisual diabetes self-management for at least 4 of the AADE7 Self-Care Behaviors
- Develop a plan to produce one diabetes education handout in accessible format
Intended Audience
The
AADE Webinars are knowledge-based
activities designed for individual or groups of diabetes educators, including
RNs, RDs, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists,
Physician Assistants, MDs, and other health care providers interested in staying
up to date on current practices of care for their patients with diabetes and
other related conditions.

Ann S. Williams, PhD, RN, CDE
Research Associate Professor
Case Western Reserve University

Dr. Williams is a research associate professor at Case Western Reserve University, with a program of research focused on self-management for persons with diabetes and disabilities. For almost 30 years she has specialized in the self-management needs of people who have both diabetes and visual impairment. Previous to her research focus, she worked as a clinical nurse specialist in a variety of clinical settings, including blindness rehabilitation settings, private diabetes education practice, and a group medical practice.

The American
Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited as a provider of continuing
nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on
Accreditation.
This educational program will provide 1.5 contact hours
of continuing education credit.
AADE is accredited as a provider of
continuing nursing education by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP
# 10977).
AADE is an Iowa Board of Nursing approved provider #366. This
program provides 0.18 CEUs (1 contact hour = 50 minutes, or 0.1 CEUs).

The American
Association of Diabetes Educators, (AM001) is a Continuing Professional
Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration
(CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs)
will receive 1.5 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion
of this program. Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation does
