This 9-week online course is recommended for health care professionals who have a minimum of 2 years of experience in diabetes education.  This online course is intended as an in-depth look at the important concepts of diabetes self-management education.  Participants, working with course Facilitators, will explore the scientific basis for diabetes education and care, while artfully applying concepts to patient situations, through case studies and online discussion.

The Art and Science of Diabetes Self-Management Education Desk Reference, 4th Edition is mandatory reading for this course.  If you do not have the Desk Reference, please purchase before starting the course.

AADE CORE Concepts® Course Online

The goal of AADE's Online CORE Concepts® Course is to increase knowledge of the diabetes disease state, sharpen clinical management skills, and highlight self-management education techniques and tools that are most appropriate for assuring successful outcomes to the AADE7 Self-Care Behaviors.

This 9-week online course is recommended for health care professionals who have at least 2 years' experience in diabetes education and who know that online learning is a suitable fit with your learning style.  Learn from other participants and our experienced Facilitators as you collaborate and explore the readings and case studies and engage in the Communication Forum.

TEXTBOOK
This course is an in-depth review of the concepts of diabetes self-management education. The course requires access to the Art and Science of Diabetes Self-Management Education Desk Reference, 4th Edition. Please note that Diabetes Educators should always adhere to their clinical scope of practice when providing patient care and DSMES.

Participants, with the assistance of course facilitators, will explore the scientific basis for diabetes education and care, while artfully applying concepts to patient situations, through case studies and online discussion.

The 9-week course will include 2 Reading Weeks and 7 Modules, plus a final exam after the modules are complete. The modules include readings, online activities, and discussion board interactions based around case studies.

Registrants can expect course information to be emailed to all participants 1 week before the start of the session, with online access provided a few days before the official start of the session.

Target Audience

This learning is designed for individual or groups of diabetes educators, including RNs, RDs, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, MDs, and other health care providers interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for their patients with diabetes and other related conditions.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Assess stage of change and motivation of change.
  • Review the key components of effective behavior change goals using the SMART acronym.
  • Describe prevalence and incidence of diabetes.
  • Identify resources for and aspects of planning, implementing and evaluating a DSME program.
  • Distinguish pathophysiological differences between type 1, type 2 and GDM.
  • Compare differences between DKA and HHS, as well as possible treatments.
  • Formulate individualized goals of therapy based on patient-specific characteristics.
  • Differentiate acute and chronic complications.
  • Create a drug therapy plan that includes blood pressure and dietary changes for patients with diabetic
    nephropathy.
  • Summarize approaches to pain management.
  • Identify and problem solve barriers and high risk situations.
  • Discuss current and new therapeutic options.
  • Determine optimal therapeutic regimens for patients with diabetes to achieve individualized cardiometabolic
    goals.
  • Select appropriate insulin preparations for patients based on the pharmacokinetic profile, acquisition cost
    and individualized glycemic goals.

Seven Modules will be covered over the 9-week period:

  • Module 1:  Basic Knowledge (How People Learn & Change, Motivational Interviewing, and DSME)

  • Module 2:  Diabetes and Pregnancy 

  • Module 3:  Diabetes Prevention

  • Modules 4 and 5:  Focus on Type 1 DM

  • Modules 6 and 7:  Focus on Type 2 DM

How It Works

  • Required to have access to the 2017 edition of the Art and Science of Diabetes Self-Management Education Desk Reference (4th Ed.).    
  • You must register at least 2 weeks before the start of the class. No enrollments will be accepted within 1 week of start of session.  Registration is often full 4 or more weeks before the start of a session, so we encourage early registration.
  • The course will be 9 weeks of reading, online activities, case studies, and online discussion board interaction with participants and facilitators.
  • The first "pre-work module" readings (Desk Reference chapters 1 and 2) should be completed before the official course start date.
  • Each session will have small groups for discussion with other participants and experienced facilitators. Communication will occur within the online discussion boards (communication forums). 
  • Learners can expect to devote about 4-5 hours a week to complete all material.
  • Course is pass/fail.
    • Each participant will be expected to post a minimum of 3-4 messages in the discussion boards for each module.
    • Final exam must be passed with a minimum of a 70% to pass. Two attempts are allowed.
    • Certificate of credit issued upon successfully completion of the course and passing the Final Exam.
  • The final exam period will start a few days before the course session ends, and extend a week past the course session end-date.
  • Learners can work on the course at their own convenience. Discussion participation for each module must be completed within the one-week timeframe designated for that module in the course syllabus--in order to ensure active discussions.
  • We recommend that you stay on track with the syllabus each week, so you don't fall behind (e.g., you can work for one hour and then log off and come back three days later and work for another hour or two).
  • The syllabus structure includes 2 reading weeks included between 7 course modules.

Refunds

AADE provides full refunds (less $100 administrative fee) for registration canceled no later than 8 business days prior to the first day of the course .
All cancellation requests must be received in writing . To receive a refund, submit your written request to AADE Membership Services (membership@aadenet.org). All refunds are processed within 30 days of receipt. No refunds will be issued after the session has begun.

Rescheduling

Rescheduling (postponing the use of paid registration to a future occurrence of the same program) is subject to availability and can only be requested one time before an Administrative fee ($100) will be charged.
