Practical Suggestions in Working with Adults with Diabetes and Mental Illness

September 28, 2016

Location: Online

Event Date: September 28, 2016
Event Time: 1:00–2:30 p.m. Eastern Time

Please Note: All times are Eastern. Our 90-minute webinars begin at 1:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 noon Central / 11:00 am Mountain / 10:00 am Pacific.

Program Overview

Diabetes educators often feel unprepared and lack the knowledge and experience to work with those with mental illness and diabetes. Diabetes educators are responsible for providing resources related to healthy coping, which can be more complicated for those with serious mental illness. This live webinar will increase diabetes educators' skills in identifying and recognizing mental health challenges in their everyday practices, as well as learning to integrate diabetes self-management into the treatment plan of those with serious mental health challenges.

Learning Outcome

Webinar attendees will have increased awareness about the mental health comorbidites that can be seen with treating people with diabetes, as well as increased knowledge about skills necessary to work with people with psychiatric comorbidities, unique concerns with treating people with chronic mental health conditions and diabetes, and mental health resources available to diabetes educators, nationally and locally.

Activity Type:

This is a knowledge-based learning activity. This 90-minute online session includes a presentation followed by a question and answer period.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
  • Define current state of comorbid diabetes and mental illness
  • Describe main differences between DSM-V defined diagnostic categories
  • Describe the interaction between diabetes and mental illness
  • List levels of psychiatric treatment
  • Discuss key skills in working with comorbid diabetes and mental illness
  • State techniques to use to help reinforce your goal of improved diabetes self-management and working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Identify key organizations available as resources for mental health issues
