Program Overview

Clinical Aspects of Diabetes Education is a self-paced, 3-module online course that focuses on essential knowledge of diabetes needed by non-diabetes educator clinicians who want to enhance their ability to work with patients with diabetes. Nurses, dietitians, and pharmacists should consider this interactive course as one of the first steps towards becoming a diabetes educator.

Available in an easily accessible online format, each module in this self-paced course includes:

• Video vignettes presenting a clinical situation relevant to each module
• Detailed multimedia lecture presentations
• Interactive exercises to reinforce learning
• Virtual case-study discussions to illustrate the contributions of each member of the multidisciplinary team
• Additional resources for continued learning
• Printable job aids

Module List

Module 1: Defining Diabetes
Learn about the scope of the diabetes epidemic, and gain knowledge on the normal physiology and pathophysiology and clinical characteristics of the disease.

Module 2: Clinical Practice Guidelines
Discover how the various diabetes clinical practice guidelines can be used to direct patient interventions, improve outcomes, and enhance quality of life for your patients.

Module 3: Complications of Diabetes
Understand the acute and chronic complications of diabetes so that you can provide appropriate care, help reduce patient risk, and support patients to progressively adopt positive self-care behaviors.

Note, this course material was previously part of the ABCs of Diabetes Education course that we no longer offer. So if you have taken the ABCs course, we recommend you do not register for this course, as you would be repeating the material.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, the participant will be able to:

• Describe the pathophysiologic differences between type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes
• State the diagnostic criteria for diabetes and pre-diabetes
• Explain the application of clinical practice guidelines to daily practice
• Teach patients how to recognize and treat hypoglycemia
• Describe the signs, symptoms, treatment and prevention of acute and chronic complications
• List the risk factors for macrovascular disease
• Identify opportunities for diabetes education interventions for acute and chronic complications of diabetes

Continuing Education Credit

This educational program will provide 6 contact hours of continuing education credit. Learners must complete the entire course and successfully complete the final learning assessment with a score of 70% or higher to earn CE. A statement of credit will be provided online.

Accreditation Information

Registered Nurses

The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

This educational program will provide 6 contact hours of continuing education credit.

AADE is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP # 10977).

Registered Dietitians

The American Association of Diabetes Educators, (AM001) is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive 6 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this program. Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation does not constitute endorsement by CDR of a provider, program, or materials.

Registered Pharmacists

The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited bythe Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuingpharmacy education.  This programprovides 6.0 contact hours (0.60 CEU’s) of continuing education credit.
