Using
Motivational Interviewing in Your DPP to Support Behavior Change and Retention
90-minute Webinar Recording
Effective dates for CE credit: 8/2/2019 – 8/2/2022
Program
Overview
This
webinar gives a brief overview of Motivational Interviewing (MI) concepts in
the contexts of addressing diabetes prevention behaviors and developing
supportive group dynamics in DPP classes. The overall objective is to
inform/refresh National Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coaches in the
person-centered skills of MI to help facilitate not only effective individual
and group conversations about goal setting and behavior change, but also to
foster a cohesive group dynamic. This process is a success factor in Diabetes
Prevention Program participant retention; it is hoped that Lifestyle Coaches
will come away ready to discuss successful MI-based communication and retention
strategies to engage with DPP class participants.
Learning Outcome
The Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coach will be able
to successfully engage MI-based communication strategies to encourage and
empower class participants for lifestyle behavior changes and positive group
dynamics.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
-- Discuss
the righting reflex and contrast it with the Spirit of Motivational
Interviewing (MI).
-- Identify the five basic MI communication
principles in a health behavior dialog with a person with pre-diabetes.
-- Recognize when MI micro skills are appropriate
or optimal to engage.
-- Identify group dynamics and how MI
principles/skills can be used to facilitate supportive group climate in DPP
cohort classes.
