Description

This program will discuss recent changes in national guidelines for care of people with type 2 diabetes and review the new treatment algorithm recommended in the American Diabetes Association’s 2020 Standards of Care. It will provide a review of each of the blood glucose lowering agents’ mechanism of action, efficacy, and place in therapy and help diabetes educators design a treatment plan to improve blood glucose control and lower A1c levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

Learning Outcome

Diabetes care and education specialists will be able to make medication recommendations based on patient-specific factors and will be able to educate patients on each of their anti-hyperglycemic medications and what to expect.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
-- Describe changes to recent national guidelines for care of individuals with type 2 diabetes
-- Analyze the mechanism of action, efficacy, and place in therapy for each of the blood glucose lowering agents
-- Design a treatment plan to improve blood glucose control and lower A1c levels in people with type 2 diabetes

Activity Type:

This is an application-based learning activity. This 90-minute online session includes a presentation followed by a question and answer period.

Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.ncbde.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

ADCES is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.
