Overview

This online course explores emerging populations, specifically in the context of diabetes care. People of different cultural backgrounds may have different expectations, beliefs, and goals in their approach to healthcare. Being culturally competent means being respectful of and responsive to differences in diverse population groups.

The course consists of a presentation by Dr. Oluwaranti Akiyode, with breaks for a few multiple-choice questions, followed by a case-study activity. Afterward, you will take a short post-learning assessment and complete a course evaluation.

Learning Outcome

Participants will be able to describe effective strategies to provide culturally competent education and care to African American, Latino, Asian, and other emerging populations.

Upon completion of this online course, participants will be able to:
• Describe the cultural influences on health in African American, Latino, Asian, and other emerging populations.
• Identify social determinants of health that are barriers to the treatment adherence among minority populations.
• Recognize strategies for effective patient-provider communication among minority populations.

Intended Audience

This online course is designed for individual or groups of diabetes educators, including RNs, RDs, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, MDs, and other healthcare providers interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for their patients with diabetes and other related conditions.

Successful Completion

After you have completed the coursework, you will take the post-learning assessment. It has 5 multiple-choice questions. Your overall course completion will be based upon successfully passing the post-assessment with a score of 70% or better (4 or more correct). You will get three (3) tries to pass the assessment.

After you successfully complete the post-learning assessment and course evaluation, you will get access to a statement of credit, showing the CE credit you earned. Please print it for your records. (Note, you will be able to return to print it later, if needed.)

Pharmacists must provide their date of birth (MMDD) and NABP ePID to receive credit. Pharmacist learners who fail to provide this information will not receive credit for this activity.

The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 10977, for 2.0 contact hours. RNs must retain this document for 4 years after the activity concludes.

American Academy of PAs (AAPA)

The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 2.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 12/11/23. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)

CDR Credentialed Practitioners will receive 2.0 Continuing Professional Education units (CPEUs) for completion of this activity. Completion of this RD/DTR profession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (One IPCE credit = One CPEU). If the activity is dietietics-related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (One 60 minute hour = 1 CPEU. RDs and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Log. Performance Indicator selection is at the learner’s discretion.

Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Other Health Professionals

ADCES is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.
