Program Overview

This 4-hour course gives diabetes educators increased knowledge of insulin dosing, titrations, and concentrated insulins, along with strategies for contributing to improved patient adherence. Includes lecture, interactive online activities, detailed case studies, and downloadable resources.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

• Discuss current guidelines and recommendations for dosing, titrations, and concentrated insulins.
• Evaluate individualized patient follow up and monitoring frequency to assess optimal pharmacotherapy outcomes.
• Discuss adherence barriers to insulin therapy in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
• Review and develop an individualized patient care plan to promote optimal medication adherence.

Learning Outcome

Learners will have increased knowledge of dosing, titrations, and concentrated insulins, and how they may contribute to improved patient adherence.

Dr. Susan Cornell is the associate director of experiential education and an associate professor in the department of pharmacy practice at Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy in Downers Grove, Illinois. Dr. Cornell is also a clinical pharmacist consultant and certified diabetes educator, specializing in community and ambulatory care practice. Her current clinical practice is with the Bolingbrook Christian Health and Will-Grundy Medical Clinics, where she trains, educates, and supervises students from the colleges of medicine, pharmacy, and health sciences, as well as individual diabetes care and medication therapy management for patients in numerous underserved community clinics.

Dr. Cornell served as President of the Illinois Pharmacists Association in 2011. She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the 2017 Outstanding Diabetes Educator—Illinois. She is an active member of the American Diabetes Association, and the American Association of Diabetes Educators, where she served on their board of directors from 2004 to 2007. Dr. Cornell has published and contributed to many peer-reviewed, professional publications, was an associate editor of the fourth edition of the AADE Diabetes Education Desk Reference.

Continuing Education Credit

This educational program will provide 4 contact hours of continuing education credit. Learners must complete the entire course including case studies to earn CE. A statement of credit will be provided online.

The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

This educational program will provide 4 contact hours of continuing education credit.

AADE is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP # 10977).

The American Association of Diabetes Educators, (AM001) is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive 4 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this program.
