Gestational Diabetes Online Course

Gestational Diabetes Online Course is a self-paced, four-module course that focuses on the diagnosis and disease state, nutrition and physical activity, monitoring and medications, and also management throughout pregnancy and beyond. The course provides diabetes care and education specialists with up-to-date general guidelines for diagnosing and treating gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).



Modules Included

Module 1: Diagnosis and Disease State
The goal of this module is to identify the criteria and screening process for diagnosis of GDM.

Module 2: The Role of Nutrition and Physical Activity
The goal of this module is to describe the role of nutrition and physical activity in the management of GDM.

Module 3: Monitoring and Medications
The goal of this module is to describe the use of medication and the purpose of monitoring in the treatment of GDM.

Module 4: Management Throughout Pregnancy and Beyond
The goal of this module is to describe management strategies for pregnancy and postpartum with GDM.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Describe the definition, diagnosis, and pathophysiology of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
• Describe the role of nutrition and nutrition recommendations for GDM.
• Discuss the benefits, risks, and recommendations of physical activity in managing GDM.
• Describe recommendations for monitoring during pregnancy with GDM, including self-monitoring blood glucose, ketone testing, A1c testing, continuous glucose monitoring, and additional maternal and fetal monitoring.
• List recommendations for the use of medication to treat hyperglycemia in GDM.
• Discuss the role of healthy coping, risk reduction, and problem solving in GDM.
• Describe the timing of delivery of a baby in women with GDM.
• Describe the physiological and emotional advantages for breastfeeding over formula feeding for women with GDM.
• Discuss the risk for subsequent GDM, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes in women with a history of GDM.

Learning Outcome

Learners will be able to describe the guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of GDM during pregnancy and postpartum.

CE Credit Information

4 contact hours of continuing education credit.

There is a post-learning assessment at the end of the course, with a mandatory passing rate of 70%. You will have three attempts to pass. Upon successfully completing the entire course and the post-learning assessment, and submitting an evaluation survey, learners will receive 4 hours of continuing education credit and a Statement of Credit. CE credit for this course must be earned by 2/28/23.

Course Availability

Learners will have 6 months to complete the entire course once registered, or until the course accreditation period ends on 2/28/23 (whichever comes first).

Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers(www.ncbde.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

ADCES is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.
