Course Overview

This online course explores finer areas of how to be more culturally competent when working with people in African American, Latino, Asian, and Arab populations -- specifically in the context of diabetes education.

People of different cultural backgrounds may have different expectations, beliefs, and goals in their approach to healthcare. Being culturally competent means being respectful of and responsive to differences in diverse population groups. In this course you start out getting a better understanding of the sort of cultural differences you might see as a diabetes educator working with people from many backgrounds, and then explore specific ways to positively address individual cultural and linguistic needs.

After completing this course, the participant will be able to describe strategies to provide culturally competent care to African American, Latino, Asian and Arab individuals.

The 2-hour program includes a 90-minute online presentation/lecture, short interactive knowledge-checks, and two case study explorations. Successful program completion is based on viewing the presentation, completing the case study activities, and passing a brief post-learning assessment with a score of 70% or better.

Learning Objectives

After the course, the learner should be able to:

    • Describe the cultural influences on health in African Americans, Latino, Asian, and other emerging populations
    • Identify common barriers to treatment adherence among minority populations
    • Recognize strategies for effective patient-provider communication among minority populations

Dr. Oluwaranti Akiyode is a professor of pharmacy at Howard University College of Pharmacy in Washington, D.C., and serves as the college's director of professionalism and professional development.

She is a board certified advanced diabetes manager at Howard University Hospital Diabetes Treatment Center, where she collaborates with endocrinologists to deliver medication therapy management to diabetes patients. In this role, Dr. Akiyode provides services to the underserved population in the community, emphasizes prevention care, and integrates behavioral and spiritual health with physical health.

Dr. Akiyode's leadership service includes the supervision of preventative education to healthcare professionals and collaborative work on professional associations' position statements and practice synoposis with the goal of enhancing patient health outcomes. She was recognized as the Meri Lou Murray Diabetes Educator of the Year in 2011 by the Washington, D.C., coordinating body of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She has extensive knowledge in training in diabetes management and provides training to interprofessional groups of healthcare providers from diverse practice settings at both local and national meetings.

The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

This educational program will provide 2 contact hours of continuing education credit.

AADE is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP # 10977).

Registered Dietitians

The American Association of Diabetes Educators, (AM001) is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive 2 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this program. Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation does not constitute endorsement by CDR of a provider, program, or materials.

Registered Pharmacists

The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.  This program provides 2.0 contact hours (0.20 CEU’s) of continuing education credit.
